Histone H4 is one of the 5 main histone proteins involved in the structure of chromatin in eukaryotic cells. H4 is a structural component of the nucleosome, and is subject to covalent modification, including acetylation and methylation, which may alter expression of genes located on DNA associated with its parent histone octamer. Protein function: Core component of nucleosome. Nucleosomes wrap and compact DNA into chromatin, limiting DNA accessibility to the cellular machineries which require DNA as a template. Histones thereby play a central role in transcription regulation, DNA repair, DNA replication and chromosomal stability. DNA accessibility is regulated via a complex set of post-translational modifications of histones, also called histone code, and nucleosome remodeling.
