Lipids are organic small molecules, that are usually hydrophobic or amphiphillic. This group includes fat, fatty acids, waxes, triglycerides, sterols and phospholipids for example. Lipids are the main structural component of biological membranes of all cells. As such bacterial lipid structures and glycolipids can serve as pathogen-associated-molecular-patterns (PAMPs) and are recognized by our immune system. Various lipids of bacterial origin are therefore used as immunostimulants.
