Plasmids

Plasmids are small, circular, double stranded DNA-molecules of mostly bacterial origin. A plasmid replicates independently from the genome which usually results in a high copy number. Plasmids are often used as cloning vectors for the amplification of recombinant DNA. Many plasmids carrying cDNA fragments are commercially available for molecular cloning. Moreover plasmids can also be utilized as expression vectors for the production of proteins in cells. Plasmids and backbones optimized for various expression systems and species have been developed.
