This protein catalyzes the first and rate limiting step in the biosynthesis of serotonin, an important hormone and neurotransmitter. Protein function: Oxidizes L-tryptophan to 5-hydroxy-l-tryptophan in the rate- determining step of serotonin biosynthesis. [The UniProt Consortium]
