CD1d, also known as CD1.1 and Ly-38, is a 48 kD type I membrane glycoprotein that is structurally similar to MHC class I and is non-covalently associated with beta2-microglobulin. In humans, the CD1 family consists of group I (CD1a, CD1b, and CD1c), group II (CD1d), and group III (CD1e) proteins, but CD1d is the only CD1 molecule found in mice. Mouse CD1d has broad tissue distribution, and is found on leukocytes, dendritic cells, epithelial cells, and thymocytes. CD1d plays a role in presenting non-peptide glycolipid antigens to CD1d-restricted T cells, and PKCdelta has been identified as a critical regulator of CD1d-mediated antigen presentation. Protein function: Cell adhesion molecule that mediates cell-cell contacts and regulates T-cell responses via its interaction with ALCAM/CD166. Contributes to signaling cascades triggered by activation of the TCR/CD3 complex (PubMed:24584089). Functions as a costimulatory molecule, promotes T-cell activation and proliferation. Contributes to the formation and maturation of the immunological synapse. Functions as a calcium-dependent pattern receptor that binds and aggregates both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Binds both lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Gram-negative bacteria and lipoteichoic acid from Gram- positive bacteria. LPS binding leads to the activation of signaling cascades and down-stream MAP kinases.
