Anti-ZIP4

This gene encodes a member of the zinc/iron-regulated transporter-like protein (ZIP) family. The encoded protein localizes to cell membranes and is required for zinc uptake in the intestine. Mutations in this gene result in acrodermatitis enteropathica. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. Plays an essential role for dietary zinc uptake from small intestine. The Zn(2+) uniporter activity is regulated by zinc availability (PubMed:32348750, PubMed:17202136). Exhibits also polyspecific binding and transport of Cu(2+), Cd(2+) and possibly Ni(2+) but at higher concentrations (PubMed:22242765, PubMed:31914589). Cellular localization: Cell membrane , Multi-pass membrane protein . Recycling endosome membrane , Multi-pass membrane protein . Colocalized with TFRC in the recycling endosomes. Cycles between endosomal compartments and the plasma membrane in response to zinc availability.
