The protein encoded by TAL1 is a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor. TAL1 is a transcriptionally complex gene that is expressed throughout development, activating or repressing transcription in hematopoietic, neural, and endothelial precursors. This gene is mapped to chromosome 1p33. Protein function: Implicated in the genesis of hemopoietic malignancies. It may play an important role in hemopoietic differentiation. Serves as a positive regulator of erythroid differentiation. [The UniProt Consortium]
