Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen(PSMA) is a 110kDa type II transmembrane protein. The gene is located at 11q, which is highly expressed in the normal and malignant prostate secretory acinar epithelium, and also in some benign epithelial cells of breast, duodenum and kidney. At present, PSMA is considered to be a specific marker of prostate cancer. Protein function: Has both folate hydrolase and N-acetylated-alpha-linked- acidic dipeptidase (NAALADase) activity. Has a preference for tri- alpha-glutamate peptides. In the intestine, required for the uptake of folate. In the brain, modulates excitatory neurotransmission through the hydrolysis of the neuropeptide, N-aceylaspartylglutamate (NAAG), thereby releasing glutamate. Involved in prostate tumor progression.
