General transcription factor II-I (TFII-I) was identified as a helix-loop-helix (HLH) and leucine zipper factor that could bind to upstream initiator (Inr) and E-box promoter elements. TFII-I is a ubiquitous multifunctional transcription factor that can mediate the transcription of many genes. TFII-I has also been identified as a gene deleted in Williams-Beuren syndrome. Alternate designations for TFII-I are GTFII-I, bruton tyrosine kinase-associated protein 135, BTK-associated protein 135, WBS, DIWS, SPIN, IB291, BAP135, BTKAP1, TFII-I, WBSCR6, and BAP-135.
