In the brain, Connexin 40 helps facilitate communication between neurons, allowing for proper cognitive function and coordination. Research suggests that disruptions in Connexin 40 expression may contribute to neurological disorders such as epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease. In the immune system Gap junctions formed by Connexin 40 facilitate the transfer of signaling molecules between immune cells, enabling a coordinated response to pathogens and foreign invaders. Protein function: One gap junction consists of a cluster of closely packed pairs of transmembrane channels, the connexons, through which materials of low MW diffuse from one cell to a neighboring cell.
