ABCG2 (ATP-binding cassette, subfamily G, member 2) also known as ABCP, BCRP (Breast cancer resistance protein) or MRX (Mitoxantrone resistance-associated protein), is a protein that in humans is encoded by the ABCG2 gene. The gene encodes a membrane transporter belonging to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) superfamily of membrane transporters, which are involved in the trafficking of biologic molecules across cell membranes.The protein is also a high capacity transporter for uric acid excretion in the kidney, liver, and gut. In vitro assays of isolated membrane preparations revealed a high-capacity, vanadate-sensitive ATPase activity associated with ABCG2 expression that was stimulated by compounds known to be transported by this protein. Protein function: High-capacity urate exporter functioning in both renal and extrarenal urate excretion. Plays a role in porphyrin homeostasis as it is able to mediates the export of protoporhyrin IX (PPIX) both from mitochondria to cytosol and from cytosol to extracellular space, and cellular export of hemin, and heme. Xenobiotic transporter that may play an important role in the exclusion of xenobiotics from the brain. May play a role in early stem cell self-renewal by blocking differentiation.
