Phenylpyruvic acid is an active metabolite of the essential amino acid L-phenylalanine (Cay-31498) and a biosynthetic precursor to the antifungal phenyl alkanoic acid 3-phenyllactic acid (Cay-36365). It inhibits glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) in rat brain homogenates when used at concentrations of 0.6 and 1.2 mM. Addition of phenylpyruvic acid to the culture medium of lactic acid bacteria increases 3-phenyllactic acid levels in, and the antifungal activity of, the cell-free culture supernatant. Urinary levels of phenylpyruvic acid are increased in patients with phenylketonuria (PKU), an inborn error of metabolism characterized by a deficiency in phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) activity.Formal Name: alpha-oxo-benzenepropanoic acid. CAS Number: 156-06-9. Synonyms: Phenylpyroracemic Acid, 3-Phenylpyruvic Acid, beta-Phenylpyruvic Acid, PPA. Molecular Formula: C9H8O3. Formula Weight: 164.2. Purity: >95%.
