Paeonol is a phenol that has been found in Paeonia and has diverse biological activities. It inhibits LPS- and IFN-gamma-induced migration and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in BV-2 microglia when used at concentrations of 10 and 30 µM. Paeonol inhibits histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells induced by compound 48/80 (Cay-22173) and reduces mortality in a mouse model of compound 48/80-induced anaphylactic shock when administered at a dose of 0.5 mg per animal. It reduces hepatic necrosis and serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in a mouse model of hepatotoxicity induced by acetaminophen (Cay-10024) when administered at a dose of 100 mg/kg.
