DL-Cystathionine is an intermediate in the synthesis of cysteine that is produced from homocysteine and serine by the action of cystathionine-beta-synthase (CBS). CBS can also mediate the condensation of cysteine with homocysteine to produce cystathionine and hydrogen sulfide.
