Dexmedetomidine is the (S)-enantiomer of medetomidine, an imidazole compound that binds to alpha2-adrenoceptors (Ki = 1.08 nM) with high affinity and selectivity compared to that of alpha1-adrenoceptors (Ki = 1.8 µM).
