Conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate by HMG-CoA reductase is the rate-limiting first step in the cholesterol biosynthetic pathway. Alternatively, HMG-CoA can be cleaved into acetyl-CoA and the ketone body acetoacetate in mitochondria by HMG-CoA lyase.
