This gene encodes a growth regulator which inhibits the proliferation of a number of tumor cell lines. It regulates cytokine production, including IL-6, G-CSF and GM-CSF from endothelial cells. The ED50 as determined by the dose-dependent stimulation of the proliferation of human TF-1 cells is < 0.2 ng/ml, corresponding to a specific activity of > 5.0 x 106 units/mg.
