Interleukin 6, IL-6, is a multifunctional cytokine with an essential role in host defense by regulating immune and inflammatory responses. It is expressed by various cell types, including T cells, B cells, monocytes/macrophages, fibroblasts, and possibly tumor cells. IL-6 has diverse biological functions, stimulating B-cell differentiation and antibody production, synergizing with other factors in hematopoiesis and platelet production, inducing hepatic acute-phase protein expression, and regulating bone metabolism.
