Cellular prion protein (PrPc) is a cell surface glycoprotein expressed in brain, spinal cord, and several peripheral tissues that if mutated to the protease-resistant isoform PrPSc (scrapie PrP, PrPres) can result in one of several fatal neurodegenerative diseases.
