An antibiotic is a chemical substance that kills bacteria, protozoa or fungi or inhibits their proliferation. Due to this antimicrobial function antibiotics are used as therapeutics in case of bacterial infections. In life sciences, antibiotics are often used for selecting clones after transformation of recombinant DNA. This method uses resistance genes that are part of the transformed DNA.
