Buffy coat is the term used to describe the boundary layer between red blood cells and blood plasma, which is formed when whole blood is centrifuged. The film consists of leukocytes as well as platelets and accounts for only about 1% of the total blood volume in healthy individuals. Since the cells contained in the buffy coat play an important role in our body's immune response, these products are needed to study disease mechanisms.
