Product Description: MMP13 (matrix metalloproteinase-13), also known as collagenase-3, plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA) by degrading type II collagen in articular cartilage. MMP13 is the primary MMP involved in cartilage destruction and is an attractive target for OA treatment. Increased expression of MMP13 in chondrocytes tips the balance towards cartilage catabolism, leading to OA development and progression. MMP13 also mediates osteoclast fusion and activity, contributing to multiple myeloma-induced bone disease. Additionally, MMP13 promotes tumor angiogenesis both directly and indirectly. In summary, MMP13 is a key player in the pathogenesis of OA and other diseases, making it an attractive target for therapeutic interventions. Protein Function: Plays a role in the degradation of extracellular matrix proteins including fibrillar collagen, fibronectin, TNC and ACAN. Cleaves triple helical collagens, including type I, type II and type III collagen, but has the highest activity with soluble type II collagen. Can also degrade collagen type IV, type XIV and type X. May also function by activating or degrading key regulatory proteins, such as TGFB1 and CCN2.
