n-Propionyl-coenzyme A (n-propionyl-CoA) is a derivative of CoA (Cay-16147, Cay-21499, Cay-21722) that contains the short-chain fatty acid propionic acid. It is formed primarily by metabolism of essential amino acids and through beta-oxidation of odd-chain fatty acids. It accumulates in propionic acidemia, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by non-functional propionyl-CoA carboxylase (PCC), the enzyme that catabolizes n-propionyl-CoA to methylmalonyl-CoA (Cay-23551). n-Propionyl-CoA is also a precursor in the synthesis of D-alpha-hydroxyglutaric acid (Cay-25895, Cay-11605) in bacteria. n-Propionyl-CoA has been used as an internal recovery standard for the quantification of HMG-CoA (Cay-25394) by HPLC.
