Crotonyl-coenzyme A (crotonyl-CoA) is a derivative of CoA (Cay-21499, Cay-21722) that contains the short-chain fatty acid crotonic acid (Cay-43903). It is formed from lysine and tryptophan catabolism and fatty acid beta-oxidation and serves as a precursor to acetyl-CoA. Crotonyl-CoA is a cofactor for crotonyl transferases, which mediate the post-translational modification of lysine residues on various proteins, including histones. Histone crotonylation is associated with activation of gene expression..
