The BSA Metabolic Stress Reagent Set (Palmitate and Oleate BSA Complexes) contains a 5 mM solution of BSA-palmitate complex, a 5 mM BSA-oleate complex, and a fatty acid-free BSA control. BSA-Palmitate Complex (5 mM) is composed of palmitic acid (Cay10006627, Cay43561) and fatty acid-free BSA at an approximately 6:1 molar ratio of palmitate:BSA. BSA-Oleate Complex (5 mM) is composed of oleic acid (Cay90260, Cay24659) and fatty acid-free BSA at an approximately 6:1 molar ratio of oleate:BSA. The BSA-fatty acid complexes and BSA control were prepared at the same time with the same lot of BSA under sterile conditions, then filtered and aliquoted into sterile vials. BSA-palmitate and BSA-oleate complexes have been used for efficient fatty acid delivery to cells in culture for the purpose of monitoring fatty acid oxidation or similar processes in various cellular metabolic studies. Palmitic and oleic acid are the predominant non-esterified fatty acids in plasma but have differing effects on metabolic stress. Under conditions of visceral obesity, palmitic acid accumulates and is incorporated into complex lipids that trigger inflammatory processes leading to insulin resistance. In contrast, oleic acid can prevent palmitic acid accumulation by promoting beta-oxidation of saturated fatty acids, thereby preventing the subsequent inflammation and insulin resistance. Cayman's BSA Metabolic Stress Reagent Set (Palmitate and Oleate BSA Complexes) is suitable for use in short- and long-term cell culture applications (25+ hours).
