Dyes and Labeling Reagents

This category comprises chemicals for permanent and temporary labeling of organelles, proteins, and other molecules. For example, this includes the covalent linkage of a target protein, such as an antibody, with a fluorescent dye/fluorophore, allowing detection of the target protein in microscopic experiments. For the purpose of detection, proteins can also be coupled with reporter enzymes (e.g. HRP) or radioactive isotopes. To facilitate the purification of a target protein, biotinylation followed by streptavidine affinity binding has proven to be effective.
