Detergents

Detergents are amphiphilic, organic chemicals. These substances, also called surfactants (surface active agents), possess a lipophilic tail and a hydrophilic head group. Detergents like Triton X-100 form stable interphases between hydrophobic and hydrophilic compounds. This results in the solubilization of the hydrophobic molecules in water. In research, detergents are used for cell lysis, isolation of poorly soluble proteins (e.g. transmembrane receptors) and for membrane permeabilization.
