Silver hexafluorophosphate

Silver hexafluorophosphate is a versatile chemical compound primarily used as a reagent in inorganic and organometallic chemistry. It acts as a source of silver ions and, importantly, replaces halide ligands with the weakly coordinating hexafluorophosphate anion (PF6-), often driving reactions by precipitating the corresponding silver halide. Its utility lies in replacing weakly coordinating anions with the non-coordinating PF6- counterion, thereby generating highly electrophilic cationic complexes of transition metals, organometallic species, and carbocations. This property makes it valuable in the synthesis of various complexes, including those used as catalysts and in the development of new materials. Additionally, it finds application as oxidizing agent, for preparation of supramolecular networks of Ag(I) complexes, and in the production of electrolytes for electrochemical devices like lithium-ion batteries.
