N-Methyldeoxynojirimycin

N-Methyldeoxynojirimycin is an inhibitor of alpha-glucosidases and glycoprotein processing. It inhibits the rabbit intestinal alpha-glucosidases sucrase and maltase (IC50s = 0.068 and 0.46 µg/ml, respectively) and R. niveus glucoamylase (IC50s = 1.6 and 4.7 µg/ml with starch or maltose as substrates, respectively). It is selective for these enzymes over beta-glucosidase (IC50 = 363 µg/ml). N-Methyldeoxynojirimycin inhibits highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) oligosaccharide processing in HPAI-infected chicken embryo cells. It reduces the cytopathic effect of HIV in infected Karpas-45 T cells.
