Glutathione (GSH) ethyl ester is a cell-permeable derivative of GSH (Cay-10007461), a nucleophilic co-substrate to glutathione transferases. It increases mitochondrial GSH levels in C38 and IB3-1 epithelial lung cystic fibrosis cells when used at a concentration of 10 mM. GSH ethyl ester (10 mM) decreases reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and TNF-alpha-induced IL-8 secretion in IB3-1 cells. GSH ethyl increases mitochondrial complex I, also known as NADH dehydrogenase, function and reduces depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane potential in IB3-1 when used at concentrations of 10 mM and 1mM, respectively. It decreases lipid oxidation and ferroptosis in cystine-deficient PANC-1, AsPC-1, BxPC-3, and S2-013 pancreatic cancer cells. GSH ethyl ester increases the viability of irradiated human lymphoid cells when used at a concentration of 5 mM.Formal Name: L-gamma-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine, 3-ethyl ester.
