A nontoxic, natural compound. One of its derivatives 1,4-GL increases detoxification of carcinogens and tumor promoters/ progressors by inhibiting beta-glucuronidase and preventing hydrolysis of their glucuronides. When it was fed during the initiation , promotion, or both phases of chemically induced rat mammary carcinogenesis it was found to reduce tumor incidence and multiplicity.
