An iron chelator, decreases the levels of iron in iron-citrate complexes at 50 µM, reduces the number of P. falciparum oocytes, an effect that can be prevented by the addition of ferric chloride, and the percent of flagellated P. falciparum male gametocytes in vitro at 25 µM, decreases the urine and fecal levels of iron excreted from iron-loaded C. apella monkeys at 150 µmol/kg.
