Ertapenem is a long-acting, broad-spectrum antibiotic that is in the beta-lactam subclass known as carbapenems. It inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls by attaching to penicillin-binding proteins. Ertapenem is effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
