The pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs. Similar to other vascular endothelial cells, pulmonary artery endothelial cells (PAEC) modulate coagulation and fibrinolysis by producing activators and inhibitors of both processes. In addition, PAEC produce mediators that influence the adhesion and aggregation of blood platelets. PAEC also control vascular tone by synthesizing and processing vasoactive molecules. PAEC further interact with mesenchymal cells and regulate inflammatory events. Such functions of PAEC are implicated in acute lung injury, pulmonary hypertension, edema, embolism, pulmonary artery aneurysm and chronic obstructive lung disease. HPAEC from ScienCell Research Laboratories are isolated from human pulmonary artery. HPAEC are cryopreserved at passage one and delivered frozen. Each vial contains >5 x 10 5 cells in 1 ml volume. HPAEC are characterized by immunofluorescence with antibodies specific to vWF/Factor VIII and/or CD31 (PECAM1). HPAEC are negative for HIV-1, HBV, HCV, mycoplasma, bacteria, yeast, and fungi. HPAEC are guaranteed to further expand for 15 population doublings under the conditions provided by ScienCell Research Laboratories. Recommended Medium It is recommended to use Endothelial Cell Medium (ECM, Cat. #1001) for culturing HPAEC in vitro.
