IL-17C(Interleukin 17C) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that plays a crucial role in epithelial innate immunity, especially against intestinal bacterial pathogens, acting in an autocrine manner. It stimulates the production of antibacterial peptides and pro-inflammatory molecules for host defense via activating the NFKB and MAPK signaling pathways. It acts synergistically with IL22, TNF and IL1B to induce antibacterial peptides. It may exert a protective effect by maintaining epithelial homeostasis after inflammatory challenges, such as intestinal inflammation in a dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis model.
