It catalyzes the transfer of a sulfo group to an N-unsubstituted glucosamine linked to a 2-O-sulfo iduronic acid unit on heparan sulfate, using 3'-phospho-5'-adenylyl sulfate (PAPS) as a donor. This enzyme is involved in the modification of heparan sulfate, which plays a crucial role in various biological processes, including cell signaling and viral entry. Specifically, HS3ST3B1 generates an enzyme-modified heparan sulfate that acts as a binding receptor for Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1), facilitating its entry into cells.
