Product Description: Paraoxonase 2 (PON2), is a ubiquitously expressed intracellular enzyme of the paraoxonase family, characterized by antioxidant activity and the capacity to hydrolyze lactones and aromatic carboxylic acid esters. Unlike its family members PON1 and PON3, PON2 is not associated with high-density lipoprotein and is primarily found inside cells across various tissues, especially in vital organs such as the heart, lungs, and brain. It functions by reducing intracellular oxidative stress, preventing the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), reversing mildly oxidized LDL, inhibiting monocyte chemotaxis, and enhancing cholesterol efflux. These properties contribute to its antiatherogenic effects. PON2 polymorphisms, notably Arg148Gly and Cys311Ser, have been linked to increased risks of cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease, as well as to complications in diabetes and renal disease. It is also implicated in neuroprotection and cancer, making it an important biomarker and therapeutic target in oxidative stress-related pathologies.
