Product Description: Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule 1 (NCAM1) is a multifunctional transmembrane protein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. It plays a crucial role in cell-to-cell interactions, neurodevelopment, and synaptic plasticity. NCAM1 is expressed in both neurons and glial cells and is involved in cellular migration, neurite outgrowth, and central nervous system development. The protein consists of five Ig modules and two fibronectin type III homology modules, facilitating homophilic and heterophilic interactions that activate various intracellular signaling cascades. NCAM1 is associated with several diseases, including schizophrenia (SZ), where alterations in brain ventricular ratio and prepulse inhibition are observed in transgenic NCAM1 mice. Additionally, NCAM1 is implicated in demyelinating Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and has been linked to rabies and Zika virus infections as a receptor. The protein exists in multiple isoforms, including 180, 140, and 120 kDa variants, which are developmentally regulated and involved in synaptic plasticity and neuropathological events.
