EIF5A is unique due to its post-translational modification known as hypusination, which is essential for its function. It binds to ribosomes and facilitates the elongation phase of translation, enhancing the synthesis of specific proteins that are critical for cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival. Dysregulation of EIF5A has been implicated in various diseases, including cancer, where altered expression can contribute to tumor growth and metastasis. Protein Function: Translation factor that promotes translation elongation and termination, particularly upon ribosome stalling at specific amino acid sequence contexts (PubMed:33547280). Binds between the exit (E) and peptidyl (P) site of the ribosome and promotes rescue of stalled ribosome: specifically required for efficient translation of polyproline-containing peptides as well as other motifs that stall the ribosome (By similarity).
