Product Description: Cryptic, EGF-CFC family member 1 (CFC1) is a protein encoded by the CFC1 gene located on chromosome 2 and is a member of the EGF-CFC family, which includes structurally related proteins characterized by a variant EGF-like motif, a conserved cysteine-rich domain, and a C-terminal hydrophobic region. These proteins act as competence factors during early embryogenesis, playing essential roles in mesoderm and endoderm formation, anterior/posterior axis establishment, and particularly in left-right (L/R) axis patterning. CFC1 is necessary for proper signaling of the TGFbeta-related gene nodal during gastrulation and L/R asymmetry development, and its expression is critical in early heart development. Mutations in CFC1 are associated with developmental defects such as autosomal visceral heterotaxy and congenital heart disease.
