CD63 is often used as a marker for multivesicular bodies and extracellular vesicles, as it is enriched in these structures. It is also a recognized marker for activated basophils, and is used in the basophil activation test for diagnosing IgE-mediated allergies. Deficiency of CD63 is associated with Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder characterized by albinism, bleeding, and lung disease. CD63 has also been linked to tumor progression.
