Brain Heart Infusion Broth is used for the cultivation fastidious microorganisms, including streptococci, pneumococci and meningococci from a variety of clinical and non-clinical materials. Description: Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) Broth is a modification of the media described by Rosenow and Hayden in which infusion from calf brains has replaced the brain tissue and disodium phosphate has replaced the calcium carbonate buffer. The addition of 0.1% agar can be used to lower oxygen tension to enhance the growth of anaerobic organisms. Microorganisms: Aspergillus niger ATCC 16404: Poor to very good, Candida albicans ATCC 10231: Good to excellent, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212: Good to excelelnt, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922: Very good to excellent, Neisseria meningitides ATCC 13090: Fair to good, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853: Good to excellent, Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 9763: Good to excellent, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923: Good to excellent, Streptococcus pneumoniae ATCC 6305: Good to excellent, Streptococcus pyogenes ATCC 9615: Good to excellent, Components shown as g/liter Brain Heart Infusion (from solids) 17.5, Pancreatic Digest of Gelatin 10.0, Sodium Chloride 5.0, Dextrose 2.0, Disodium Phosphate 2.5, Total: 37g/L , Directions per Liter:, Dissolve 37g per liter of ddH2O, heating with stirring until completely solubilized. Dispense into appropriate containers, loosen caps and autoclave for 15 minutes at 121ºC (15psi). Storage and Stability: Store powdered media at RT. Opened bottles should be capped tightly and kept in a dark, low humidity environment. Prepared media should be kept at 4°C and used within a short period of time. Application: Cultivation of fastidious aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Appearance: Beige, homogeneous, free flowing powder, pH: 7.4±0.2
