This gene encodes a component of the Sorting and Assembly Machinery (SAM) of the mitochondrial outer membrane. The Sam complex functions in the assembly of beta-barrel proteins into the outer mitochondrial membrane. Protein function: Plays a crucial role in the maintenance of the structure of mitochondrial cristae and the proper assembly of the mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes (PubMed:22252321, PubMed:25781180).
