Lipide sind kleine organische Moleküle, die sich in der Regel durch ihre Hydrophobie or Amphiphilie auszeichnen. Beispiele für Lipide sind unter anderem Fette, Fettsäuren, Wachse, Triglyceride, Steroide und Phospholipide. Lipide sind Hauptbestandteil der biologischen Membranen aller Zellen. Daher wirken einige bakterielle Lipidstrukturen und Glykolipide als Pathogen assoziiertes molekulares Muster (PAMPs) und werden durch das Immunsystem erkannt. Diverse Lipide und Lipidkomplexe werden daher als Immunstimulans verwendet.
