The protein in normal human urine inhibited the growth of calcium oxalate crystals, and lack of pS2 may contribute to the development of idiopathic calcium oxalate kidney stones. Urinary pS2 showed an inhibitory potency similar to that of nephrocalcin, and inhibition was dose dependent and inhibited by pS2 antisera, particularly by antisera directed to the pS2 C terminus.
