The human Equilibrative Nucleoside Transporter 1 (hENT1) mediates the cellular uptake of physiologic nucleosides, including adenosine, as well as many anti-cancer drugs including gemcitabine, cytarabine, and decitabine. De ciency of hENT1 can lead to resistance of such drugs, and the abundance of hENT1 protein in the plasma membrane is a major indicator of the e ciency and clinical outcome of these anti-cancer nucleosides. Protein function: Mediates both influx and efflux of nucleosides across the membrane (equilibrative transporter). It is sensitive (ES) to low concentrations of the inhibitor nitrobenzylmercaptopurine riboside (NBMPR) and is sodium-independent. It has a higher affinity for adenosine. Inhibited by dipyridamole and dilazep (anticancer chemotherapeutics drugs). [The UniProt Consortium]
