beta-MSH (human)

beta-Melanocyte-stimulating hormone (beta-MSH) is a peptide hormone produced by post-translational processing of proopiomelanocortin (POMC) in the pituitary gland. It selectively binds to melanocortin receptor 1 (MC1R) over MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R (Kis = 0.89, 10.64, 8.18, and 76.9 nM, respectively). beta-MSH (1 µM) induces lipolysis in isolated rabbit adipocytes. It increases plasma levels of glucagon, insulin, and free fatty acids in fed or fasted rabbits when administered at a dose of 45 µg/animal.
