Anti-MBP (MBP, Myelin basic protein, Myelin A1 protein, Myelin membrane encephalitogenic protein)

The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major_x000D_ constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann_x000D_ cells in the nervous system. However, MBP-related transcripts are_x000D_ also present in the bone marrow and the immune system. These mRNAs_x000D_ arise from the long MBP gene (otherwise called 'Golli-MBP') that_x000D_ contains 3 additional exons located upstream of the classic MBP_x000D_ exons. Alternative splicing from the Golli and the MBP_x000D_ transcription start sites gives rise to 2 sets of MBP-related_x000D_ transcripts and gene products. The Golli mRNAs contain 3 exons_x000D_ unique to Golli-MBP, spliced in-frame to 1 or more MBP exons. They_x000D_ encode hybrid proteins that have N-terminal Golli aa sequence_x000D_ linked to MBP aa sequence. The second family of transcripts contain_x000D_ only MBP exons and produce the well characterized myelin basic_x000D_ proteins. This complex gene structure is conserved among species_x000D_ suggesting that the MBP transcription unit is an integral part of_x000D_ the Golli transcription unit and that this arrangement is important_x000D_ for the function and/or regulation of these genes.
