CpG methylation is an epigenetic modification that is important for embryonic development, imprinting, and X-chromosome inactivation. The protein strongly binds DNA, suggesting that it may mark specific sequences in the genome. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
