IL-6 promotes B cell differentiation and antibody production, collaborates with IL-3 in megakaryocyte development and platelet production, triggers the expression of hepatic acute-phase proteins, and governs bone metabolism. IL-6 communicates through the IL-6 receptor system composed of two chains: IL-6Ralpha and gp130. Notably, murine IL-6 lacks activity on Human cells, while both Human and murine variants are equally effective on murine cells.
